Terrorist attacks in public places have increased as major activities organisers are always looking for methods to improve security measures.
Adding security cameras is easy as monitoring their footage requires a large number of individuals.
Japanese technology giant Hitaki says artificial intelligence can help detect suspicious activities.
Finding and tracking an individual who moves among large crowds looking at recorded motion pictures requires rapid processing of data by analyzing a number of gender factors, clothing, walking patterns, or objects that the object has with it.
Better than humans, electronic devices do that. Tomokazu Murakami is a researcher with the Hitler firm:
“Analyzing film pictures requires numerous human resources. This intelligent computer program gives hope of performing these very functions. ”
Developed by Hitachi, the system can follow individual trajectorys, count people as well as predict where the crowd can be blocked.
The program can rapidly scan and store photos and behaviors typical of any individual, at any moment, can see whether a person is sitting down, running, talking on the phone, or holding a bag in his hand.
Security personnel don't need to see all screens, while the system processes 36 million images per second and sets the alarm for suspicious actions.
The demand for this technology is increasing in Japan as a result of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. We are building technology for different uses, such as train stations, stadiums and shopping malls, says Mr. Murakami with the Hitachi firm.
Researchers point out that the system is designed not only to monitor possible problems but also to other emergency situations, as is the case when an individual needs medical help or when a child is missing. / VoA
