The leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata (BJP) party, Ram Nath Covind, a 71-year-old lawyer who has been late governor of the eastern state of Bihar, has been elected today the country's new president, the Central Election Commission announced today.
Covind won 65.6 per cent of the vote, defeating his rival, Meira Kumar, 72, the first female Parliament Speaker in India and a former federal minister of the opposition National Congress Party, reports the DPA.
Ram Nath Covind is India's second president belonging to the Dali community, after KR Narayan, who has been president between 1997-2002.
