Depression affects more than 300 million people a year worldwide and is constantly on the rise.
With this rising rate, there's a global rush to provide resources for patients, and on the other hand, unbroken research for patients to understand mental illness, transmit Periscope.
Now researchers at Maryland University Medical School have identified a gene in mice and people who can either increase anxiety or protect from stress, depending on levels.
They found that they could cause depression in mice, or make them more flexible, just converting the level of this gene's expression into their brains.

Researchers at the University of Mariland analyze the brain of mice and people to see which area of the brain is activated when depressed. They found that this gene was recorded in the reward center, also known as accumbens.
Studies have shown a link between this gene and the depression in the hippocampus field that controls emotion and memory, and is the focus of depression researching Periscope.
Mary Kay Lobo, assistant at the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, says there are many brain areas that directly affect depression./Periscopi/
