Calling Jerusalem “the eternal capital of the state of Palestine”, Palestinian president said Wednesday that the US could no longer be a mediator in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.
His comments were in response to an earlier announcement by Trump, during which he said the US was formally recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital and would begin the process of moving the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
“This is a reward for Israel”, Abbas said in a televised speech, adding that Trump's move encouraged the continued “Israel's” from Palestinian territories.
Jerusalem's status has sparked tensions between the Israelis and Palestinians for decades.
Israel conquered East Jerusalem at the end of the 1967 war with Syria, Egypt, and Jordan; the western half of the holy city was captured in the Arab-Israel War of 1948.
“President Trump's decision will not change the reality of the city of Jerusalem and will not grant Israeli legitimacy in this matter”, Abbas said.
We will achieve national independence. ”
Saeb Erekas, secretary-general of the Organisation for the Liberation of Palestine, said Trump “has disqualified his country from any possible role in the peace process” and “destroyed any peace opportunities” between Israelis and Palestinians.
“It drives this region towards chaos and violence”, Ereka told “Al Jazeera”, Periscopi broadcasts. The only remaining opportunity for Palestinians, said Erekat, “is to fight for equal rights” between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, the area of historic Palestine.
This is the most dangerous decision any American president has ever made,” he said.
