On Sunday, about 2 thousand residents of Perpignanim a town southwest of France have protested under the motto “We are the northern Catalonia, we want to place”, which they have greeted with Catalonic flags, broadcast Indescsonline.
An explanation of why they want to be independent and join Spain's Catalon is the historical fact that it was once part of France's Catalonia in line with the Iberian agreement in 1659, following the war between France and Spain, which began in 1653 as part of the Thirty Years ' War.
France has annexed the so-called Northern Catalonia with this agreement, and such a division has been preserved so far.
According to the 2011 census, this French region has 462 thousand and 705 inhabitants, and the Catalonian is known as one of the official languages of the region, even though most residents speak French.
Unlike Catalonia, this region has no autonomous status, but the name Northern Catalonia continues to be used in an informal context.
