Scientists have tried to edit genes inside the body for the first time, in an attempt to stop an incurable disease by permanently changing patient's DNA.
The signs that this will work or not will come in a month. If successful, this new technique can give a major boost to the new field of gene therapy. Scientists have edited human genes in the past, alternateing cells into labs that have been returned to patients. There's also gene therapy that doesn't include DNA editing.
But these methods can only be used for few types of disease. Some produce results that cannot last. Others offer new genes as spare parts but causing side effects, such as cancer.
This time, this is happening in a precise way inside the body.
