Earlier studies have claimed that high levels of blood phosphate increase the risk of developing heart condition.
But this is the first study to have found that low levels of phosphate are dangerous, Kosovo Press broadcast.
The perfect amount of phosphate in the blood was about 1-1.25mol/L, researchers say.
The importance of phosphate in primary and secondary health should be reviewed”, says Nick Hayward, author of the study.
“Phosphate can be a new risk factor for heart disease in adults”, he adds.
Doctors should inform patients how to lower the phosphate level if they are in danger of developing cardiovascular diseases.
Phosphate is an important body mineral that helps regulate blood minerals. It plays a vital role in carrying oxygen into the body from the heart.
The study has analysed phosphate levels in more than 100,000 patients over a period of five to nine years.
People with phosphate levels in blood lower than 0.075mmol/L were at risk of developing heart problems compared to those with phosphate levels above 1.5mmol/L.
Salmon is rich in phosphorus and can reduce the risk of heart attacks to certain amounts. It contains about 371mg phosphorus for 100g.
The pumpkin and its seeds have even more of this mineral than 1233mg per 100g seed
