More than 250 people have been arrested as opposition leader Alexei Navalny's supporters held Pauthorised protests in about 80 cities around Russia.
Demonstrators demanded that Navajo be allowed to run officially in the 2018 presidential election.
Storms and dozens of arrests were reported in the city of St Petersburg, where major protests have taken place. The gatherings coincided with President Vladimir Putin's 65th birthday.
Navalny is currently serving a 20-day prison sentence due to the ongoing violation of the law with the organisation of public meetings. This year alone, Navajo has been arrested three times.
According to election authorities in Russia, he cannot run in the March presidential vote due to another suspended sentence.
However, this has not prevented the opposition leader, who travels around Russia in recent months, from trying to strengthen his improvised election campaign.
