Don't expect Mr. Xi Jinping will change China or the world for better American Presidents have a common one when describing Chinese counterparts, they address them with superlates, which analysts say is because of the fear Americans have of Chinese, writes The Economist.

Let's start with President Richard Nixon, who once told Mao Ce Dunn that his writings have <x0... changed the world” For Jimmy Carter, Deng Xioping was the leader who had the qualities of a “wise, strong, intelligent, honest, brave, handsome, well-trusted, and above all friendly” Bill Clinton named him President of the day of China, Mr. Jiang Zemin, as a “vision” and “a man of extraordinary intellect”.

Donald Trump, the current president of America, has walked in the same line as the former presidents. In an article published in “Washington Post” he names President of China, Mr. Xi Jinping, like the most powerful “lider” that China has had in the last century. Mr. Trump can even be right. But for an American president to go so far as to say that “Xi Jinping is the world's most powerful leader”, this statement cannot be considered anything but a political suicide.

And truth is China is the world's second largest economy, but economic and military equipment are not everything. The leader of the free world has a close and transaction approach for foreigners and seems unable to implement his agenda at home.

The United States is still the most powerful country in the world, but its leader is weaker in the country and less successful abroad than any of the last ancestors, especially since he does not try to raise the values and alliances that support and increase American influence. By contrast, the president of the world's largest authoritarian state has enormous influence on other countries. His relationship with China has been stronger since Mao's leadership.

But while Mao's China was chaotic and miserable, Mr. China's. Xi Jinping is turning into a dominant engine of global growth. The first convention led by Mr. Jinping, where 2300 delegates raised him to heaven with their many praise. But many remain skeptical observers, who speculate if Mr. Jinping will use his power to benefit China and the world or not. “Bota should be very attentive and careful” on his numerous visits to foreign states, Mr. Jinping is presented as an apostle of peace and friendship, a voice of reason in a confused and troubled world and Mr. Trump has made the road even easier.

In Davos, in January, Mr. Jinping promised the global elite that he would be a champion of globalisation, free trade and the Paris Agreement on climate change. Members present were delighted and relieved by that declaration. At least they saw that great power was willing to stand for what was right, even if Trump (then the newly elected president) would not do so. Mr. Jinping is considered true, even because he has the largest foreign currency reserve in the world to support them.

One of the latest initiatives “Belt and Road”, although somewhat strange by its name, has a clear message: hundreds of billions of Chinese dollars will be invested abroad in the construction of railways, ports, energy stations and other infrastructure sectors that will help many other countries in the world to move forward. This is the kind of leadership that America has not shown since the postwar days of the Marshall Plan in Western Europe.Z. Yinging is also projecting the complete transformation of China into an unprecedented military superpower abroad. This year he opened the first military base abroad in Djibouti.

China's president is sending the navy of Chinese troops to increasingly distant countries, including the Baltic Sea and the Russian fleet. China says it would never invade other countries to impose its will (except Taiwan, which it does not consider to be a state). China claims its efforts to build the base are mainly in support of peacekeeping, anti-piracy and humanitarian missions. As for the construction of military bases on artificial islands in the South China Sea, it claims that these are merely for protection purposes. Unlike Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, Mr. Xi, he does not want or is seeking to destroy democracy and destabilise the West. Yet, he is being very tolerant of his ally, North Korea.

Some of China's military behavior also alarm its neighbors not only in Southeast Asia but also in India and Japan. Inland, Mr. Jinping is as illegal as those of the Russian counterpart.

He believes that even the slightest political carelessness can cause not only his disappearance but also that of his regime. The fate of the Soviet Union haunts him everywhere, and such uncertainty also carries consequences. Not only is he being very careful about his enemies but, above all, about civil society and middle class, which is growing at a frightening rate.

He seems determined to grow and strengthen control of Chinese society, which will undoubtedly come by increasing the state's supervisory power. All of this will make China less rich than it should be, and absolutely even a <x0mmbyte” to live. The worst part is that violation of human rights has increased greatly under Mr. Jinping.

The Liberals once called <x009 years lost” of reform under Mr. Yinging, Mr. Hu Jintao. Those ten years have been 15 years, and they can be done and exceed another 20 years. But there are also those optimists who argue we haven't seen Mr. Jinping as it really is and that Congress will help it consolidate its power and then will seriously start implementing social and economic reforms, affecting the increase in its success in reducing corruption. And most of all, what seems incredible is that Mr. Jinping is willing to retire in 2022, when his term ends. Reasons for fear. Jinping may think that the concentration of power more or less uncontrolled over 1.4 billion Chinese in the hands of a single man is also one of the most common <x2nd>s of Chinese policy”. But this cannot be considered common at all because it is dangerous. Nobody should have that much power.

The rule of a single man is at last a pretensis of political instability within China, as it was in its past, referring here to Mao Ce Dunn and his Cultural Revolution. It is also a pretensis of arbitrary behaviour abroad, which is disturbing at a time when Trump's America is retreating into a power vacuum. The world does not want an isolation of the United States and much less the development of a dictatorship in China, but with its bad fortune it can face both.
