A giant hole in Antarctica appears, frightens researchers (Photo)

The strange iceless area was first discovered in the 1970s, in the midst of the harsh Antarctic winter, despite the cold temperature of ʹ and now, 40 years later, the so-called Weddell Polynia has returned, reports “Daily Mail”, the Periscope broadcast.
Scientists are now working to understand how often mass holes appear and how climate change can affect it.

A locale is a large ice - free area that develops on another frozen sea; its features are usually known in both Arctic and Antarctic ice.
“Looks like you have only one hole in the ice”, said atmosphere physicist Kent Moore, a professor at the University of Toronto of Mississippi.

“This is now the second year in a row that is open after 40 years that has not been opened”, Moore explained.
“ande are trying to understand what's going on.”
Researchers, including a group at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Ocean Research Centre, have been monitoring closely since the first time they showed up on satellite data.
Weddell Polynia is an irregular water field surrounded by sea ice, where they are most frequently represented in the South Ocean outside Antarctica. This fetus is rare and is not yet known for its formation.

For us, this iceless area is an important point of data that we can use to prove our own climate models”, says Dr. Torge Martin, meteorologist at the GEOMAR Survey Division.
However, it is unclear how often Weddell Polynia appears and how long it will last now that it is open.
The better we understand these natural processes, the better we can identify the anthropogenic impact on the climate system”, says the atmosphere expert./Periscopi/
