It wouldn't be a surprise if Kenyan Gilbert Kipleting Chumba won the competition held on Sunday, or if his fellow countrymen David Kiprono Meto would do that, writes Koha Ditore.
In fact, both of these favourites were in the leadership group after 26 kilometers in the marathon. Then they took a wrong turn.
Guided in the wrong way by the road motorcycles, the small group of athletes leading the race followed the motorcyclist for several hundred metres off the track. A video captured the incident when the racers realized the mistake they made and went back.
Delayed about two minutes, according to agency “AP”, favourites eventually lost their step with Eyob Gebrehiwet Faniel, an athlete with Italian citizenship running only in his second marathon. Faniel runs for the Venice Club.
