A declaration of independence, viewed as historic events, occurs at a certain time and place. Today, then, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States, because on July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress of 13 colonies of Great Britain, following the Assembly Hall of Pennsylvania State Parliament in the city of Filadelfia, eventually signed the Declaration of Independence. So with that famous date, a new country was born: United States of America.
However, the U.S. Declaration of Independence, in its content, has special significance and meaning, which goes beyond the date and where it was approved. We consider these truths as self-aware: that all humans have been created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unfathomable rights; that among these rights are life, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness”. Calling into these universal values and rights, unlimited in time and space, what is now called “The spirit of” has been able not only to survive but also to live, powerfully, in the minds and hearts of the patriots of every era and every people.
This is especially true of the Albanian people. On July 4th 1918, here 108 years ago, on the 142nd anniversary of the independence of the United States of America, as representative of the Albanian federation “Vatra” Jack Noley would exchange a couple of words for President Woodrow Wilson. U.S. Presidential yacht. Mayflower, returning to Washington DC from Mount Vernon, where they did their festive honours at George Washington's grave, Noley found the case to tell 20th American president that applying his principles for self-rule would guarantee Albania its rights. President Wilson found out to our newcomer, assuring him that those principles would reign since the United States would fight for them. What we Albanians call London's Albania really survived World War I even through principles embedded in the peace plan known as the “14 points of Wilson”.
Less than a century later, the same principles that the July 4, 1776 Declaration of Independence defends so eloquently would appeal to our independence movement. The right of Kosovo's people for self-rule, since the beginning of the 20th century, had been sacrificed in the geopolitical games of the Great Powers, at the end of that same century and the beginning of the following century, would receive the most significant support from the United States of America. June 10, 2007, when George W. Bush declared in Tirana, “better than later, you have to say, here comes the end, Kosovo is independent,” is part of the most important dates of our most reformist history. So within a time span of nearly a century, from London to independent Kosovo, the Albanian self - determination battles receive twice critical support from the American nation, which here and 250 years ago declared its foundation by calling upon the infallible rights in life, freedom and the pursuit of happiness.
The text of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4th 1776, sealed the will expressed two days ago by State Parliament delegates in Philadelphia. Although written primarily by Thomas Jefferson in haste and under the pressure of the events of the day, it became a symbol of a new era in the history of political thought. The concept of infallible rights that is at the foundation of this declaration continues to remain radical to this day. With unequivocal rights, the founding fathers of the American nation meant rights that could not be removed even with the consent of their host. To this day, guaranteeing these rights for all people indiscriminately remains a civic duty for mankind.
With the best wishes for the bright future of the American nation, happy Fourth of July, enjoying the 250th anniversary of the United States of America!
