“Neymar”- increase of name records in Brazil after calling for World 2026

Neymar's last call for the 2026 World Cup has caused an unusual wave in Brazil, where some families have chosen to honor the assailant by naming their newborn children.
According to data published by g1 and based on the registrys of the São Paulo Civil State Registers Association (Arpen), only immediately after publishing Brazil's official list on May 18th, five babies were registered by the name “Neymar” in five different states of the country, in the cities of Simoisia, Curiba, Rio de Janeiro, Praia Grande and Centinario, respectively.
In total, 25 children named Neymar have been registered in Brazil during 2026 to date.
These five records taken immediately after his call represent about 20% of the annual total, pointing to the immediate impact of the Brazilian star's decision and echo, Telegraph reports, broadcast Periscope.
Arpen's historical records also show an interesting trend: the use of the name Neymar has come to a steady decline during the World Cup years following its professional debut.
2010: 186 babies named Neymar
2014: 157
2018: 67
2022: 40
In all, between 2022 and 2026, 142 children are registered with this name in Brazil.
Although the long-term trend shows a decline, his return to Brazil's 2026 World list has created a “emotional interval” among fans, reflecting on the ongoing impact of Neymar as one of the best-known figures of Brazilian football even outside the playing field. /Periscope
