List of criteria, Elez: Candidates for MPs to submit to institutional verification

Until the deadline for the 27 political subjects to surrender candidate lists is closed Tuesday, at midnight, The CEC has warned that all candidates aiming to compete in the June 7th elections for the Kosovo Assembly will be subject to the process of institutional verification.
Through this process, the Central Election Commission will check whether candidates for MPs meet the legal criteria for participation in the elections, in accordance with the Law for General Elections, Article 30, respectively.
So has made known about KosovaPress, CEC spokesman Valmir Elezi, who has remembered that the 11-day deadline for political subjects to online deliver the list of candidates for the next Kosovo Assembly for May 12th.
“Under the fulfilment of legal obligations involving the suitability/ability of candidates for certificate, the Central Election Commission will submit relevant institutions to verify, along with the list of candidates intended to qualify for participation in the election, in order to assess whether they are in line with Article 30 of the General Election Law. This is a practice followed by the CEC even in past election processes”, Elez said.
According to Article 30 of the Law for General Elections, a person cannot be certified as candidate if he or she is official with special status on the basis of the law in force for public officials; foreign service member and diplomatic representative; chairman or CEC member and the Municipal Election Commission; official of PZAP; through the court's decision, including PZAP's decision, has been denied the right to be a candidate; it has been sentenced in the last three years to a formal criminal offense, to one or more years in effective prison; it has failed to pay the fine imposed by PZAP, or the CEC; or has failed to abide by any PZAP order.
The “among the institutions from which the CEC will seek verification of the candidate is the Kosovo Judiciary Council. Under 30 of the Law for General Elections notes that the candidate cannot be a person if “has been sentenced in the last three years with a formal form ruling for criminal action, with one or more years effective” imprisonment, so for the implementation of this legal criterion, the CEC will ask the KGEC to verify the candidate list to ascertain whether any of them falls against this limit<3>, said Elezzi.
The process of verifying candidates is expected to last several days.
Only during the 2025 election processes has the compatibility of over 80,000 candidates, out of whom 5,624 local election candidates and 2,459 candidates for the two election processes for the Kosovo Assembly been verified.
