The Iranian judiciary has confirmed the execution of another detainee arrested during recent protests, as the UN and other international human rights organisations reported a significant increase in executions and arrests since the beginning of the Iran war in late February.
Sassan Azadvar Yoonqani, a 21-year-old karate athlete banned during the early January protests, was executed early Thursday morning at the Dastgerd prison in Isfahan, according to Iranian media.
A source near the family of this political prisoner said his funeral was held under strict security measures and that “only 10 of his relatives were allowed to participate”.
The UN has reported at least 21 executions and more than 4,000 arrests since the beginning of the war, warning of a growing use of the death penalty in the current security environment.
According to the Mizan news agency, which is headed by the Iranian judiciary, Azadvar was sentenced to “effective co-operation with the enemy”.
He was accused of throwing stones and sticks at a vehicle carrying security forces, breaking car windows, and throwing stones and bricks at officers during the protests.
