Diplomat Gazmend Turdiu has commented on recent developments regarding a resolution presented in the US that supports Kosovo's aspirations for NATO membership.
He described this step as a positive political step, since it would constitute the final guarantee of its security.
“Of course, Kosovo's membership in NATO is of great interest to us because it would be the outcome of ensuring the security of the state of Kosovo. A NATO member is protected as any other NATO member would.
The presentation of this resolution project for approval is a positive act, it does not represent innovation, but it is an important step, a political gesture in favour of Kosovo and in service of security interests in our region”, he said in Euronews.
The diplomat underlined that the process remains difficult due to its non-recognition by four coalition member states. He added that the other obstacle remains even complex relations between the United States and NATO.
The key “Picka and the obstacle to Kosovo's NATO membership is non-recognition by four countries. The argument that the decision is made with consensus is correct, but it is not complete.
NATO members are states, if NATO members do not all recognise them as states of Kosovo, I think it is difficult to exercise both for discussion.
US relations with NATO as an organisation and its members have become problematic, even with President Trump's recent statements, Turdiu said.
