The average price of an oil liter in gas stations in Germany rose to a record 2.32 euros Thursday, and in some places even 3 euros, the German Automobile Club (ADAC) announced. The entire super prize is also the highest ever at 2.19 euros.
This exceeded the record set in March 2022, when prices rose because of the war in Ukraine.
ADAC criticised the price hikes, given that crude oil prices fell in the first half of the week. “Frika that oil companies, which are now allowed to increase prices only once a day, would do so drastically to protect themselves, have proved justified”, ADAC said. The recent price hike has increased pressure on the German government, which has been criticised for its poor response to its oil shock.
Currently, the possibility of introducing additional tax facilities for driving, as well as lowering taxes on energy products, as is the case with several other EU countries.
A few days ago, Poland announced it would be “monitoring” and if it would be necessary to react to phenomena at gas stations in the border area with Germany, where there has been a shortage of recent days due to the mass arrival of German drivers in Poland, where fuel is much cheaper.
German Finance Minister and Deputy cakancellari Lars Klingbeil (The Social Democrat Party of Germany SPD) sent a letter to several ministries Thursday, urging urgent measures to prevent rising energy prices and inflation.
