Blanche told the show “Meet the Press” of NBC News: “We are still investigating a motive, and this is something that will necessarily last at least a few days. We believe he targeted administration officials in this attack, attempted assault, but it's again, quite preliminary”.
Those officials “are likely to include US president, Blanche added.
Blanche went on to say he does not believe the suspect is co-operating with the investigation.
He will be charged with assaulting a federal officer, shooting and trying to kill a federal officer Monday in the federal court, Blanche said, adding he did not know whether he had an Iran connection to the attack.
Investigators believe the suspect travelled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago and then from Chicago to Washington DC by train before being registered to the hotel where dinner was held, Blanche added.
He stressed that investigators were investigating reports that the suspect had made nearly “the gun somewhere in the hotel, but that “had not gone too far”.
