The IMF exposed the Kosovo Economic Development Government: Economics do not develop with money distribution, halt populist politics

Kosovo Alliance of Business Chairman Agim Sahini has commented on the International Monetary Fund for Kosovo report, stressing that it presents a real picture of the economic situation in the country. Speaking of the importance of this report, he has said it is not just a technical document. “Report [...]

Speaking of the importance of this report, he has said it is not just a technical document.

The International Monetary Fund's report is not simply a technical document -- it is a serious alarm for Kosovo's economy and politics.”, he said initially.

According to him, the report's findings coincide with concerns businesses have long expressed.

This report confirms what businesses have long been saying: the country is facing economic slowdown and continued rising cost of living.”, he added.

Sahin has particularly stopped at economic indicators, naming them disturbing for the country's development.

“An economic growth of about 3.3% is insufficient for an economy like Kosovo, while inflation of 5.9% is depleting the citizen every day. That means less consumption, less investment and less economic stability”, Sahin said.

He has stressed that this situation is not random, but is directly linked to the lack of developmental policies.

The slowdown of growth is not random. It's the result of lack of development policies. ”, he said.

In addition, he added that the country faces lack of support for key sectors.

Kosovo continues to lack serious support for domestic production, the export strategy is lacking, while political uncertainty and slow decision-making are burdening the situation.”, the head of GDP said.

According to Sahin, the effects of this situation are directly felt by citizens and businesses.

For citizens this translates into lower standard living, higher prices and less economic opportunities. While for businesses, it means rising costs and declining competitiveness.”, he said.

He has stressed that 2026 requires concrete and immediate actions by institutions.

The Kosovar Business Alliance estimates that 2026 requires urgent and bold measures: direct support for local producers, lowering fiscal burden, investing in energy and industry, as well as a clear strategy for replacing imports.”, Sahin said.

Next, he has called for a change in government approach.

The government must stop short-term and populist policies.”, he said.

Sahin has also criticised some of the current social measures, naming them inefficient for long-term development.

“Masa as the distribution of 100 euros or 13th salaries have temporary social effect, but does not create economic development. Instead, they increase spending and do not address the structural problems of the economy.”, Sahin added.

He has also warned of the dangers associated with the current structure of the economy.

Trade deficit and dependence on imports are among the country's biggest risks. Kosovo continues to import much more than exports, making the economy unstable and sensitive to global crises.”, he said.

According to him, the road ahead is clear and requires an inner development focus.

“The solution is clear, local production development, export support, investment in agriculture and industry, and increased competitiveness of Kosovo businesses.”, Sahin said.

In the end, he has warned of the consequences if no immediate reforms are undertaken.
If the economic approach does not change, Kosovo risks entering a long-term stagnation cycle. The economy does not develop with the distribution of money, but with production, investment and sustainable politics.”, Agim Sahini concluded.
