Hamza: Justice for survivors of sexual violence is moral and state obligation

Democratic Party of Kosovo Chairman Bedri Hamza has delivered talks today at the solemn session of the Republic of Kosovo, honouring the survivors of sexual violence during the recent war in Kosovo, stressing that justice for them remains one of the greatest and most sensitive challenges for the state and [...]
In his speech, Hamza said the war does not end with the silence of weapons, but only when justice reaches those left with its wounds, underlining that thousands of women and men in Kosovo still await justice for crimes committed against them.
Until these crimes remain unpunished, our collective and international conscience remains challenged. There can be no complete peace without full justice,” said Hamza.
He stressed that sexual violence during the war was not an act of chance, but a strategy proposed by the Serbian state to break the souls of the people of Kosovo. However, according to him, this effort failed in the face of the resistance and dignity of Kosovo citizens.
“Graat and the men of Kosovo were not broken. They triumphed over violence, retaining dignity and building life before,” he said.
Chairman The PDK raised concerns about the lack of justice for the victims, labeling it unfair the contrast between impunity of war crimes and lengthy court processes against those who fought for Kosovo's freedom.
During the speech, Hamza also recalled the PDK's institutional commitment, stressing that last week the Kosovo Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution proposed by this party to protect the truth and dignity of war victims.
Under this resolution, we have pledged that we will defend the historical truth and the dignity of the victims indiscriminately, against any attempt to distort it,” he said.
Hamza stressed that it is the responsibility of institutions to support the survivors more strongly, by building policies and mechanisms that not only recognise them but also empower them.
Finally, he directly addressed the survivors, praising their courage and strength to press ahead despite the trauma he experienced.
You are not determined by the crimes committed against you, but by the force with which you were raised. Kosovo stays with you. History will remember your courage,” completed Hamza.
