British Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper held a virtual meeting with representatives of over 40 states, including European countries and international partners, aimed at co-ordinating efforts to reopen this vital maritime route.
We have seen Iran take an international shipping route hostage and use it to prevent the global economy. This is hitting the trade routes of Gulf countries, but even natural gas supplies to Asia, Africa's chemical waste, and the global fuel for aircraft”.
The crisis has escalated as Iran has taken measures that have led to the effective blocking of sea passage in response to recent attacks by the United States and Israel.
In this context, meeting participants are considering joint diplomatic and economic measures, as well as ways to ensure the safety of ships and crews blocked in the area.
“At this meeting we will focus on diplomatic and international measures, including the mobilization of all our economic and political means, co-operation with industry and security companies, as well as concrete actions to ensure ship safety and sustainable opening of the strait. ”
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stressed that the international community should consider all options for restoring freedom of navigation, at a time when energy prices are increasing significantly on global markets.
