Albania signed today the Memorandum for the development of Vlora's energy humb and the $6 billion framework agreement on supply of liquid natural gas, as important steps towards diversification of energy resources and strengthening energy independence, in close co-operation with the United States, as well as concrete interaction with neighbouring Greece.
During the signing ceremony, there was also US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle, who in her address said Albania is playing a growing role as a liaison in the Western Balkans.
There are two very important agreements being signed today, which is the $6 billion deal on liquid natural gas, showing that Albania is always playing a growing role as an interconnector in the Western Balkans. In the energy sector security and prosperity, prosperity goes hand in hand. The memorandum of understanding for research, development, construction and operating of a core power centre, including a gas plant, testifies to the importance that the Albanian government devotes to sustainable energy in the best of Albanian citizens”, expressed, among other things, Wilfoyle.
For his part, Prime Minister Rama said the agreement is expected to bring a major investment to the country, where Vlora will turn into a critical point for electricity in Southeast Europe.
Right after our very pleasant conversation with the Secretary of Internal Affairs and with the people in Washington, we have an extraordinary deal today that will then bring a huge investment, modern technology and supply arrangements. So Vlora will turn into a critical energy point in Southeast Europe. And I can't just stress, the importance of what Ambassador Gilfoyle mentioned -- our need of both Albania and Greece -- to strengthen our relationship and strengthen our co-operation in many ways, but especially in terms of energy supply, energy production and energy independence resistance”, Rama said.
According to him, “By positioning Albania as a liaison, the energy flow goes through the Western Balkans, contributes to the stability of the region and affects the energy security of neighbours, and this is something that really makes us very proud and makes us feel very honored”.
