American President Donald Trump promised to completely destroy “the largest gas field in the world if Iran attacks Qatar again.
Trump on Wednesday evening, on social networks, addressed a threat to Iran, targeting the Iranian gas field “South Pars Gas”, after Iranian missiles hit Qatar. Iranian attack came in response to an Israeli attack on “South Pars” earlier on the same day.
The US-Israel War with Iran has shaken energy markets, while the conflict is increasing pressure on the region's energy sector. The price of oil rose significantly in international markets, increasing fuel and other goods costs, as well as putting additional pressure on the global economy.
Global oil prices rose after news of attacks on “South Pars”, due to fears of Iranian revenge on energy infrastructure in the Persian Gulf.
Trump in his statement said the US “knew nothing” about the attack, but a person familiar with details had said earlier that Washington had been informed of Israeli plans to hit the gas field, though he had not participated in the operation.
Hours after the attack on the field, Qatar authorities announced that a ballistic missile had hit a key national gas complex, triggering a fire that caused major “ ” damage and that Qatar expelled some of the Iranian Embassy's staff from the country.
Trump also promised that Israel would no longer carry out attacks on the main Iranian gas field South Pars, but warned that if Iran again attacks Qatar, the US will retaliate and “destroy the area massively and completely”.
He published this threat on social networks Wednesday evening, at a moment when war rocked global energy markets and Iranian missiles hit Qatar.
He reiterated that US “knew nothing” about the attack, though an informed person had earlier said Washington had been notified of Israeli plans for the attack on the gas field, but had not participated, reports Telegraph, broadcast Periscope.
Trump said Qatar “in no way, in any form” was not involved in Israeli attacks on the Iranian gas field, but that “incidentally, Iran did not know this” and attacked Qatar “fairly and without cause”.
“I don't want to adopt this level of violence and destruction due to the long-term consequences it would have for Iran's future”, the 79-year-old said.
However, he added, “would not hesitate to do so if Qatar's liquid natural gas plants are again attacked.
Qatar is a key supplier of natural gas to global energy markets.
It has already reduced production earlier during the war, but major damage could delay the return of Qatar's supplies to the market after the war with Iran ended. /Periscope/
