US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Germany and other NATO countries for failing to offer assistance in securing Hormuz Strait. The Allies' position is “quite shocking”, Trump said at the White House. Trump expressed disappointment with the Allies. “I think NATO is making a very thick mistake”. This case was a test for the alliance, Trump added.
“We helped Ukraine, but they are not helping Iran, even though all agree that Iran should not have nuclear weapons”, Trump criticised. “We as United States will remember this because we see it as quite shocking”, Trump said at a reception for Irish Prime Minister Michelal Martin at the White House.
Trump reaffirmed again the possibility of a US withdrawal from NATO: “This is obviously something we should think about”, he said. “I don't need Congress to make that decision”. In 2023, however, the U.S. Congress adopted a law requiring Congress's approval of any possible attraction.
Trumpet with criticism against Germany
Trump also criticised Germany in this context. He said the German government had declared that it had nothing to do with Iran's war and therefore did not want to get involved in the Hormuz Strait. At the same time, however, Germany believes that the US and Israel had “done something big --” eliminating Iranian leadership. Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed on Monday (16.03): “We do not participate in this war; we have said that since the first day”. Such rejection also applies to the military security of the Strait of Hormuz.
On Sunday, Trump urged NATO partners to support the US to secure Hormuz's plight against Iranian attacks on oil tankers. The president threatened that lack of assistance would be the very bad “” for the future of the alliance. However, Germany and other NATO countries unanimously rejected Trump's request. NATO is a defence alliance. If one of its members is attacked, Article 5: other states are obliged to offer help. So far, Article 5 has only been used once: on September 12, 2001, a day after terrorist attacks on the US. Article 5 does not apply if a country NATO launches a war like the case with the current Iran war. /DW/
