American expert stressed that Serbia has no strategic alternative but integration into the European Union, adding that “Serbia cannot be transformed into a Belarus of Europe”.
According to him, the United States of America, the European Union, and especially NATO must use their influence to push Belgrade towards a clear political decision.
I have argued that these actors should exert coordinated pressure. I also stressed that Kosovo's progress towards NATO would force Serbia to face reality”, Joseph said.
Commenting on Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq's proposal and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama for Serbia and Albania's membership in the EU without a right to veto, Joseph described the idea as a “cal of Troy”.
According to him, such an approach could cause divisions within the European Union itself, especially in the context of future enlargement.
He added that in Serbia's case, the goal seems to be to curb Montenegro's rapid progress towards the EU, making a comparison with Russian President Vladimir Putin's stance on Ukraine's EU membership.
“For Vucic, such a development would constitute a strategic loss and a political humiliation”, Joseph concluded./berliner-zeitung
