The United States is dispatching about 2,200 marines and three amphibe warships from Japan to the Middle East. These forces form the Tripoli amphibious attack group.
The group is led by USS Tripoli (LHA-7) and joined by the USS San Diego (LPD-22) and USS New Orleans (LPD-18). The deployment also includes approximately 20 F-35B aircraft Lighting 2 / 1
The USS Tripoli ship and the 31st Marine Exhibition Force, which are part of this force, are normally stationed in the Japanese ports of Sasebo and Okinawa.
Officials stress that this move does not mean that the entity will be used as the ground force to operate in Iran. Its deployment provides military commanders with additional land, amphibious and air forces that can be deployed if necessary.
