European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos Is Charged for Being an associate of Serbian UDB

These claims emerged after promotion on March 10th at the European Parliament's subx0> Komesarka”, Slovenian author Igor Omerza, in which documents are presented that, according to the author, prove that Marta Kos has collaborated with the Yugoslav secret police.

Slovenian Eurodeput Romana Tomc, a member of the European People's Party, organised the promotion by the largest political grouping in the European Parliament. Shortly after the promotion, Tomc sent a letter to the European Commission, referring to the contents of the book.

“In the new documents it is suggested that Marta Kos, as a candidate, lied to the European Parliament's parliamentary committee after declaring he has never been an associate of Yugoslav secret police”, Tomc wrote in the letter published on social networks.

She asked the European Commission if it is aware of the new claims, whether it intends to verify and what measures it plans to take to prevent Martha Kos from lying during the hearing in the European Parliament, given that the Commission is obliged to observe the highest standards of integrity.

However, Guillaume Mercier, European Commission spokesman responsible for enlargement, denied that the Commission has received this letter.

“Commissioner Kos has passed a broad and detailed verification process to join the College. The European Parliament approved its appointment in the same process as for all 27 commissioners. Directorate of State Security ( UDB, known as Woodba, was formed in Yugoslavia shortly after the end of World War II in 1946, while in 1966 it was renamed to the State Security Service.

Woodba is known for its role in the persecution of political opponents in Yugoslavia after World War II, while much of its activities in the following decades was focused on the prosecution and elimination of people in diaspora who were considered against Yugoslavia's interests.

The charges that Marta Kos has been an associate of the Yugoslav secret police appeared for the first time in 2017 during the hearing to confirm her appointment as a Slovenian candidate for European commissioners. At the time, Kos denied any link and called the claims dezinforms.
