He studied Islamic law under the direction of many senior clerics, including Iran's late supreme leader, Ajothallah Ali Khamenei.
He has also held high positions in the ministry of intelligence and the Office of the Supreme Leader.
The American Treasury sanctioned his role as head of the Iranian Intelligence Ministry “for involvement in cyber activities against the United States and its allies” in 2022.
While reports that Khatib joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in 1980, shortly after the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
