This situation has caused great concern, since many families have difficulty coping with the necessary expenses.
Food prices, such as meat, flour and other essential products, have increased markedly, burdening the citizens' economy and reducing the purchasing power of households.
In February 2026, annual inflation reached about 6%, with a monthly increase of about 0.6%, marking the highest rate of price growth since 2023.
The price hikes have raised concerns among economic experts, where some businesses have warned that some businesses are exploiting this holiday period for profit, while market institutions must intervene to prevent price manipulation.
The head of the Association “Consumer”, Ceatin Kacannik in a proposal, has spoken about increasing the price of essential products on the eve of the Bajram holiday, saying the situation is disturbing and repeated each year.
“Based on the logic of the fundamental law of offering and demand of all traders are prepared for dung and have sufficient supply and sufficient demand, the price must be balanced not increased. If we have this recurring phenomenon that some years should address this” situation, he said.
He adds that rising prices in this period are not related to the lack of supply, but to exploiting the moment for profit on the part of some businessmen.
We have to be together and join the price, this moment for price raising everyone is exploiting. We don't have mechanisms or institutions that can prevent price creation and manipulation”, Kachanic said.
Former Trade and Industry Minister Ismet Mulaj has criticised the increase in prices of products during the holidays in Kosovo, naming it a bad practice that has been created in recent years.
According to him, in many countries around the world prices drop at holiday periods, until the opposite occurs in Kosovo.
Mulaj has called for intervention by institutions responsible for monitoring prices.
The “is a bad practice that has been created in Kosovo in recent years. In many different parts of the world, prices have been lowered in the event of holidays, because the amount of consumption is increased, and businesses are more interested in rain, in Kosovo the opposite happens in case of holidays, and are abused. Business uses this situation. Market inspector had to control these and fine them”, Mulaj told “Front Online”, broadcast Periscope.
Kosovo Chamber of Commerce and Industry Director Kuqim Ahmeti has spoken about rising prices on the eve of holidays.
He said recent developments in Middle Linda and the rising price of oil have begun to affect other sectors as well.
Ahmeti has also ruled out the possibility of award abuses in the event of parties.
“We have a market inspector who has an insufficient number of workers and cannot convey all the developments that happen, we have a competition commission that doesn't have a board yet just looks like a spectator than it can take action, these should influence us not to abuse the” prices, Ahmeti said.
He has cited the challenges facing market inspectors and not the influence to prevent price abuse.
