During his speech to Kosovo's Specialised Chambers in The Hague, Wessel has declared that his actions have been legal and that there is no evidence he has committed war crimes.
I know who I am, what I did and what I didn't do... My actions were legal. The court must at all costs defend truth, justice, and impartiality. Even in the darkest moments, I did not lose confidence that the truth will prevail. Freedom cannot be achieved by injustice. My family and I have lived in constant persecution. I know what it means to live in constant threats, it's an experience I'd never wish for anyone. After decades of investigation and documents, there is no evidence that I committed crimes”, Wessel added.
He said he returned to Kosovo, since he has not been able to remain indifferent to the suffering his people were experiencing.
