Trump, British pressure: Do not hand it to Chagos uritius

Another clash between the United States and Great Britain. US President Donald Trump criticised this Thursday's United Kingdom plan to transfer the sovereignty of the Chagos Mauritius Islands and rent Diego Garcia's military base for a 99-year period. In a post on the social network, Trump [...]

In a post on the Social Truth Social Network, Trump stated that “this territory should not be occupied by the United Kingdom” and that giving it would be “a stain for our great ally”, thus referring to official London. He stressed that lease agreements “are not appropriate when it comes to states” and warned London is making a big mistake by entering such a long-term agreement.

Trump's comments come despite Washington's earlier granting official support to London's plan to overcome the sovereignty of the British Territory of the Indian Ocean Mauritius.

In response to Trump's statements, the United Kingdom Foreign Ministry said the Agreement on the Chagos Islands is <x0); will remain essential for the security of the United Kingdom and our main allies, as well as for the protection of British citizens”. According to her, this agreement is the only “way to ensure the long-term future of this vital military base”.

The US president's statements come ahead of talks expected to take place next week between the United States and Mauritius on the issue.

Diego Garcia is the largest island of the Chagos Archipelago and is used as a common military base by British and American forces. Under the deal announced in May of last year, the United Kingdom will rent this base for a 99-year period following the transfer of sovereignty.

Trump has also stressed the island's strategic importance, describing Diego Garcian as a key military point in the Indian Ocean, while warning that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer risks losing control over this important territory due to territorial claims and the uritius agreement.. /Periscopi/
