Ortecs hit the Castle Peak area of Truke, about 16km north of Lake Tahoe, about 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, local time.
Initially, authorities were looking for nine missing persons, but Wednesday morning confirmed that eight of them have lost their lives, while another has not yet been found.
The nine other nine skiers have found themselves dead”, said Nevada District Sheriff Chanan Moon, according to international media.
Mrs. Moon stressed that difficult conditions and the danger of further avalanches had hampered rescue efforts while the operation was still under way.
The ski group consisted of 15 people who were returning from a three-day tour outside ski resort limits, according to the tour organising company Blackbird Mountain Guides.
The saved skiers, including a guide and five customers, took refuge in an improvised shelter.
