Former US President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary are calling for their testimony in Congress on ties to convicted sex traffickers Jeffrey Epstein to be held publicly to prevent the Republicans from politicising the case.

The two Clintons were ordered to give closed-door testimony to the House of Representatives overseer committee, which is investigating the late financer's connections with powerful figures and the way information about his crimes is handled, writes The Guardian.

The Democrats say the investigation is being used to attack President Donald Trump's political opponents himself, an early Epstain associate who has not been called to testify rather than carry out legitimate supervision.

Republicans of the House of Representatives had earlier threatened with a court contempt vote if the powerful democratic couple did not appear to testify, which they have agreed to do ever since.

Hillary Clinton, former state secretary, said the couple had already told the Republican-led supervisory committee “that we know”.

If you want this war... let's do it publicly”, she said Thursday.

The former president has admitted to flying Epstein's plane in the early 2000s for humanitarian work linked to the Clinton Foundation, but said he has never visited Epstein's private island.

Hillary Clinton, who ran against Trump for president in 2016, said there had never been meaningful interactions with Epstein, never flew his plane, never visited his island. /Periscope
