A 40-year-old Kosovo woman has been fined in Bern for keeping nicotine during purchases. By this act she had violated the ban on facial coverage. Kosovar was located at a supermarket in Bern on January 6, 2025, broadcasts albinfo.ch. She kept the nikkab, from which only the eyes looked.
By taking this action she has violated the current prohibition on facial coverage she knew, or at least she could and should know, as the Public Prosecutor's Office of Bern Canton declares in her criminal order.
The woman in question is now found guilty of violation of federal law that prohibits facial coverage. It will be fined 100 francs, writes 20 minutes.ch. If you don't pay the fine, she faces a one-day prison sentence. The fine will not result in a criminal precedent.
In addition to the fine, the Kosovo woman must also pay 100 franc procedure fees.
Face coverage ban is in effect in Switzerland since January 2025
Since January 1st of this year, a ban on facial coverage has taken effect in Switzerland, with few exceptions. Anyone covering his face in public spaces, for example with burka or niqab, can be fined up to 1,000 francs, contains albinfo.ch. The Egerkingen Committee (which had initiated the law) has recently announced that it had received 21 reports concerning the jiqabs and burkas.
Exceptions from stopping facial coverage are allowed only for health or safety reasons, to protect against extreme weather conditions, or to preserve traditional customs: face masks or motorcycle helmets, but also masks in the Carnaval or ski masks on the snowy slopes. /Periscope/
