This is the first time India has publicly acknowledged that it has not been able to attract investment from Musk, even after it revealed incentives for global electric giant vehicles last March.
Minister of HH Kumaswamy confirmed that Tesla will open two exhibition halls in India and will have a minority presence.
“Mercedes Benz, Skoda-Volkswagen, Hyundai and Kia have shown interest [in the production of electric vehicles in India]. Tesla we don't expect from them”, Koumaraswamy said.
Another official told the Press Trust news agency of India that a Tesla representative had participated in the first round of discussions with parties interested in the production scheme, but “was not part of the second and third round”.
Comments follow US President Donald Trump's statement, in February, that it would be unfair “to the US if Tesla were to build a factory in India. /Periscope/
