Israel challenges international law, legalise new Jewish settlements on Palestinian lands

Israeli ministers have announced that approval has been given for legalisation of 22 new Jewish settlements in the occupied West Coast, the largest such expansion in decades. According to Defence Minister Israel Katz, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, some of these settlements existed earlier as “outpost” built without official permission from the government, but will now be legalised under Israeli law.

It is known that the housing issue is one of the hottest points of conflict between the Israelis and Palestinians. According to international law, they are widely considered illegal a stance Israel opposes.

However, Israeli ministers have justified this step as an act to stop the creation of a Palestinian state, which he considers a threat to Israel's security. On the other hand, the Palestinian presidency has described this development as a “dangerous escalation”.

According to the BBC, Israeli organisation “Pace Noe”, which monitors construction in occupied territories, warned that new settlements “will dramatically reform the West Coast and further deepen the 87x3> invasion.

Since the invasion of the West Coast and East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East War, Israel has built about 160 settlements where today some 700,000 Jews live on lands that Palestinians see as part of their next country.
