In a secret vote held today, Merz secured 310 votes -- 6 less than the necessary majority. And even though coalition parliamentary groups CDU/ CSU and SPD have 328 seats in Parliament, Merz did not get the required majority.
According to the DW, this failure was new in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany, as there had never before failed to elect a candidate for Chancellor, following Bundestag's elections and successful coalition negotiations.
