Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arghchi said he is ready to visit Germany, France and Britain for talks on his state's nuclear programme.
Tehran has recently reopened nuclear talks with the United States, conducting two round talks mediated by Oman. Third run is expected to be held on Saturday in Oman, followed by Periscope.
Germany, France and Britain, along with the US, are the states that were signatories of the 2015 agreement, which eased international sanctions on Tehran in exchange for curbing Iran's nuclear programme. But the deal broke after American President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018.
After my recent consultations in Moscow and Beijing, I am willing to take the first step with visits to Paris, Berlin and London”, Arghchi wrote on X, adding that he is open for talks “not only on nuclear issues, but on any other field of common interest and concern”.
Arghchi was in China the day before he met his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, before Saturday's talks with the US.
Last week he visited Moscow for similar talks. There he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Arghchi expressed satisfaction with the level of co-operation with allies, China and Russia, but said on Thursday that relations with the three European powers, or E3 (France, Germany and Britain), “are currently in decline”.
He added that “now the ball is in the field of E3”, stressing that they “have an opportunity to secede from the impact of special interest groups and follow another”.
France Foreign Ministry spokesman Christophe Lemoine told AFP will expect Paris to see if the announcement by the Iranian top diplomat will be followed by any concrete action.
He added that France is willing to continue dialogue with Iranians on nuclear issues.
Germany and Britain have yet to be declared regarding the possibility of Iranian Foreign Minister's visit.
Iran and E3 have recently taken steps to resume dialogue on the nuclear issue, holding several meetings since late last year.
After Washington's withdrawal from the deal, Tehran respected the 2015 agreement for a year before it began gradually withdrawing from the pact, increasing uranium to 60 percent ʹ very high compared to the limit set by 3.67 percent in the deal but still below the 90 percent needed to create a nuclear bomb. / REL
