March 15th protest in Belgrade, EU has an appeal

The European Union told Serbia that the fundamental values are at the core of our common European “project” and should be respected, while calling for lowering tensions. This Brussels response comes after warnings of a major rally in Belgrade, scheduled to be held on March 15th, in which Serbian authorities anticipate having <x0-> the major violence”, while the president of state has warned arrests.

This also has to do with freedom of rally as fundamental right”, free Europe Radio Free from the EU Information Office said in response.

Similarly, the EU said citizens' participation plays a key role in developing a healthy and democratic society, including promoting transparency and responsibility.

In recent days, Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, has warned several times that the “posor will organise a major violence on March 15th” and that “all those participating in it will be arrested”.

“The EU constantly calls for lowering tensions, creating conditions for an inclusive dialogue involving all interested parties, including political actors, institutions and civil society members, to deal with reforms needed for Serbia's future in the EU”, it is said in response from Brussels.

EU officials confirmed they are carefully following the domestic political situation in Serbia and the large mobilization of students and other groups.

When asked about Vuciqi's statements, which say the West is behind “multicolored revolution”, as he calls mobilization of students and citizens in Serbia, EU officials stressed that “dezinals and political rhetoric, including against The EU and member states have no place on the road to EU integration”.

Serbia's students have invited for a rally, which they have named the most massive “collection ever” in Serbia's capital on 15 March.

Students from various regions of Serbia who will spend tens of miles to attend the rally in Belgrade are already on foot in Belgrade.

Students in Serbia are now organising gatherings in several large cities in Serbia, demanding responsibility for the deaths of 15 people in Novi Sad following the collapse of a concrete shelter at the Novi Sad railway station on November 1st, 2024.

Students, through blockades and protests, are seeking the publication of all documentation regarding the reconstruction of Novi Sad's Hekurudor Station to determine responsibility for the accident, prosecution of attackers in the ongoing protests, as well as suspension of procedures against those arrested in demonstrations.

Serbian authorities claim they have met all student requests, while a group of experts formed by the University of Belgrade Senate has denied this claim in his report.
