Serbia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a reaction late Tuesday has considered the “adoption agreement for the military alliance signed by Kosovo, Albanian and Croatian defence ministers during today's day in Tirana.
In response, Serbia has said it will submit urgent requests to the foreign ministries of Croatia and Albania, demanding detailed explanation regarding the signing of the trilateral memorandum for co-operation in the field of defence. According to Belgrade, with this agreement, these two states, “along with the illegal representative of the provisional institutions of self-government in Pristina”, have taken steps that undermine regional stability.
Serbia, as the response claims, as a state guaranteeing peace and military neutrality in the Balkans, “properly requires answers to the nature and objectives of this co-operation in the field of security”. Especially Serbia sees a disturbing fact of why this military alliance has formed without any consultation with Belgrade, “with direct involvement of a structure that has no international legitimacy and poses a threat to the Serbian people and the entire region”.
We will not ignore the clear political message of this initiative. It is evident that this memorandum is not the result of random co-operation, but a strategy intended to isolate Serbia and strengthen paramilitary structures in Serbia's southern province, contrary to international law and with UN Security Council Resolution 1244”, the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said.
Serbia views as very significant that two of its neighbours -- Croatia and Albania -- have decided to launch this agreement and that an invitation to join this co-operation has been sent to Bulgaria as well. If, reportedly, this agreement is not directed against anyone, then Serbia seeks to explain why it has been excluded from any negotiations on collective security in the region.
Serbia claims unilateral arming and military co-operation with illegal structures on Kosovo's territory constitutes serious violations of international law order and direct threat to regional peace.
Serbia will not accept this in silence. As a state that, despite its military neutrality, is active in fighting terrorism and modern security threats, Serbia has been ready to consider the possibility of genuine co-operation with Croatia and Albania. However, this initiative, which is being implemented without Serbia but with Pristina, represents open provocation and serious disregard for reality on the ground”, the statement said.
Serbia, according to the statement, expects immediate answers from Zagreb and Tirana on the real goals and objectives of this dangerous “military initiative”.
