Greek authorities have sent special forces, rescue teams, tents and fears to the island of Santorini after hundreds of seismic swings were recorded in the area.
Amid fear of a larger earthquake that could cause a tsunami, people were advised to avoid coastline and abandoned buildings, empty pools, and refrain from gathering large numbers in closed spaces.
The Civil Defence Ministry said schools would be closed as a precautionary measure Monday.
Nothing can be ruled out,” said Costas Papazachos, a professor of geophysics at Thessaloniki Aristotle University. And this is why precautions are being taken, just to limit the impact of a stronger earthquake. ”
The night before, as similar measures were taken in Amorgos and the nearby islands of Ios and Anfi, rescue teams in Santorini set up tents in high areas in basketball fields and in parking cars. In case of a tsunami, people were told to go inside.
