The Vatican says Pope Francesescu was in critical condition Saturday after undergoing a prolonged astmatic breathing crisis while being treated for pneumonia and a complex lung infection, the Vatican says.
In a statement, they said Pope “is not out of danger” as his situation continues to deteriorate. It is the first time that <x2cricial>” has been used in a written statement to describe Francescu's situation since his hospital appearance on February 14th.
“Papa Francescu experienced a respiratory crisis similar to the prolonged asthma, which called for managing high-flow oxygen”, the Holy See said in a statement.
The statement also said that the 88-year-old Argentinan Pope continues to be vigilant and is spending most of his days on an armchair. They added that he was suffering more pain than Friday.
Francescu also called for management of blood transfusions after his blood tests discovered the thrombocitopeni, a condition linked to anemia.
Doctors warn of possible deteriorating situation
Doctors treating Francescu at the Gemelli Hospital in the Italian capital, Rome, have warned that his situation could continue to deteriorate. They say the main threat facing the pope would be the beginning of the serps, a serious blood infection that could happen as a complication of pneumonia.
Doctors who have monitored his blood tests say that there was no evidence so far indicating the presence of the serps. The Pope's medical team noted in their first deepening update on Francescu's situation that he was responding to various drugs he had been given.
The tests on Saturday's blood showed that he had developed the thrombocitopeni, a state of low blood clots. The low number of thrombocites may be caused by a number of things, including side effects from medication or infections, according to the US National Institute of Health.
Francescu, who has chronic lung diseases, was admitted to hospital after a week-long period of bronze deteriorated. Doctors first diagnosed the complex viral, bacterial, and fungal infection of respiratory leafing and then tested for pneumonia in both lungs.
It was described as the absolute “ ”, in addition to combining cortisone, various antibiotics, along with additional oxygen as needed.
Doctors who deal with Francescu say that if he develops the safe, it could lead to organ failure, or potentially death.
“Seps, with respiratory problems and his age, would be really hard to get away from”, says Dr. Sergio Alfier, head of Medicine and Surgery at Gemelli Hospital.

“He knows he's in danger”, Alfier noted, “and he told us to transmit this”.
The Vatican says he remains in a good mood, has breakfast every day and has continued to work from his hospital room.
Francisco became the pope of the Roman Catholic Church in March 2013 and is the first pope from America.
