NATO Deputy General Secretary Radmila Sekerinska has stressed the importance of stability and post-election process in Kosovo, but also throughout the Western Balkans region.
She said NATO does not intervene in domestic politics, but expects a functional government and progress in dialogue with Serbia, which she views as essential to regional stability.
We have generally moved into an unstable situation and when there are elections in the region, like these, a particular order should be dedicated. Fortunately, however, the elections passed and had no direct impact on stability. It is clear that citizens will exercise their right to vote, and now it is definitely the process after elections that matter most. But this is not something that NATO neither intervenes nor influences. We expect the government representing Kosovo institutions to be elected.
And we actually want movement on the question of dialogue, progress in dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade. We believe this is the right investment in the further stability of the region”, Sekerinska has said.
As for security, Sekerinska recalled that NATO has increased the number of KFOR troops in response to some events as the terrorist attack on Zvecan Basjsk.
“What we have done from an incident that occurred in Kosovo is certainly to add our KFOR troops. And that I think is very much about NATO dedication, investments that we are there and supporting political dialogue”, has added NATO Deputy General Secretary-General.
Regarding Kosovo's NATO membership, Sekerinska stressed that this is an issue that requires further progress in Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
When it comes to NATO membership, this is actually the next phase, and we really need to see progress in the dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade. That's why we support the EU-led dialogue. We want to move forward and discuss issues that are of interest to all in the region”, NATO Deputy General Secretary for RTV Dukajni has stressed.
