Chaos in Novi Sad: Police did not allow opposition advisers to attend the Municipal Council session

Today, democracy has been suspended in Novi Sad. Police have not allowed Serbian opposition advisers to enter the building and participate in the session where the new chairman, deputy mayor and members of the Municipal Council were elected. From early in the morning, in front of the Novi Sad Municipal Council building. [...]

Since early hours of the morning, a fully equipped police cordon has been created in front of the Novi Sad Municipal Council building, Nova reports.

The adviser and president of the Bravo Movement, Miran Pogacar, explained that opposition representatives went with the intention to participate in the session.

We tried to enter the most peaceful way possible. However, police created a cordon and a small passage. I told them that we are deputies of the city's Parliament and let us in. They did not allow it, and at that moment they began to intervene”, Pogacar said.

Police started using force. They used shields, hands and feet, they hit and pulled”, he said.

This has been confirmed by SPG adviser Mladen Cvijetic, who has explained that opposition advisers are planning to say from the speaker that the Assembly session is illegal because unconstitutionally postponed twice and that the mayor cannot be the man who ordered the beatings to beat citizens.

Police were painted red, and then citizens were thrown with eggs, boxes of yogurt, ink, toilet paper, and even flour. In some cases, police have retaliated by throwing garbage on citizens.

Then students and university professors appeared on the plateau opposite the Parliament, which at this gathering had come as citizens, not students blocked and formed a peaceful “morge” in front of police officers.

Speaking of all that happened, Democratic Party adviser Veljko Krstosic said it was unprecedented, while city adviser and MP Borislav Novakovic estimated that democracy was suspended yesterday in Novi Sad.

It looks like we're on the front. Decisions are not made legally within, opposition MPs are prevented from entering Parliament. Democracy has been suspended. This is a disaster, democracy has died”, Novakovic said, adding that this city has been under occupation since today.
