Turkey, 23 people lose their lives by illegally produced alcohol

Officials said that since the beginning of the year, 34 people have died as a result of alcohol illegally produced methol.
According to the recent study published in Turkey, methanol is often added to alcohol produced illegally instead of ethanol, because it is cheaper and can cause blindness, liver damage and death.
The number of illegally produced alcohol poisoning cases is not a rare phenomenon in Turkey, where private alcohol production has increased due to tax hikes by authorities for alcoholic beverages, the CBS News recalls.
According to government officials, in 2024, 110 people in Istanbul were poisoned by alcohol, of which 48 died.
