There are fears that dozens of people have died from oppression in a crowd at the “Mela” festival in India, local officials have said at the scene, as many people went to wash themselves at one of the most sacred sites for Hindus.
People were oppressed in the early hours of Wednesday, after tens of millions gathered to be immersed in the water where the Ganges and the Yamuna rivers are united, reports the paper. “The Guardian”.
According to the confessions of the participants, one of the most severe pressures occurred after a crowd of people went into the river to wash themselves while others were sleeping on the floor around the river's banks that had been filled with people.
As the crowd grew in many ways, people started trying to make their way through, and many of them started falling on the floor, crossing obstacles and stepping on each other. Another pressure reportedly occurred near one of the entrances.
As a result, many bodies were found lying on the floor around the river's bank. Until Wednesday morning, there was still no official confirmation from police or local government officials of the number of victims.
However, BBC television reports at least 12 deaths.
