According to foreign media, Cardinal McElroy, 70, is a strong supporter of Francescu's priorities for refugees, environment and the hospitality of Catholics LGBTQ. It will follow Cardinal Wilton Gregory, 77, who was Washington's first African-American archbishop, DC.
Francescu also appointed the first female leader of a Vatican department on Monday. Sister Simona Brambilla will become mayor of the office of the religious life of the Holy See, which is responsible for nuns, monks, and reins.
At the beginning of Trump's first mandate, then Bishop McElroy gave a speech in Modesto, California, specifically referring to Trump and urging Catholics to become the “divisions of the agenda against immigrants.
We had to divide those who would seek to send troops to our streets to expel the undocumented, to remove mothers and fathers from their families. We must prevent those who portray refugees as enemies rather than our brothers and sisters in dire need,” he said.
