German opposition leader Friedrich Merz, who is thought to be Germany's next Chancellor, has vowed to build 50 gas-powered thermal power plants if its conservatives win the February 23rd snap elections, the newspaper t-online reported on Sunday.

The production of gas power in Germany has increased by a record 79% in November compared to a month ago, Reuters reports.
Wind power production was 25% below levels a year ago in October and November 2024 due to slow wind speed, deprived of energy firms from a key power source just in early winter. Wind farms supplied 27% of German electricity in 2023.
Merz, head of conservative bloc CDU/ Germany's CSU is thought to succeed Social Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whose divided coalition with the Green and pro-business Free Democrats collapsed in November due to conflicting plans to revive the country's sluggish economy.
