NEW ORLINS A driver has massacred in New Orleans' well-known French neighborhood in the early hours of New Year's Day, killing at least 10 people. He drove through the crowd before being shot to death by police, authorities said.

More than 35 people were injured after Wednesday's attack turned Bourbon Day Street into a macabre chaos. The FBI is investigating the story as a terrorist act. Authorities are considering the possibility of involvement in and carrying out the attack.

The driver has been identified by the name Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, 42, told the Associated Press news agency six law enforcement officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Investigators were working to collect additional information about the author's background and were also investigating a black flag placed on vehicles. According to an FBI statement, the flag is the terrorist group Islamic State. According to the FBI, the suspect Jabbar is an American citizen from Texas and is investigating possible “connections to terrorist organisation”.

In a photo circulated for law enforcement officials, the suspect Jabbar appeared with a beard and dressed in camouflage clothes near the truck after being killed by police.

Suspect Jabbar was killed during a shootout exchange with police after the attack, about 3:15 a.m. in an area filled with people celebrating New Year's arrival, the FBI said.

Investigators found a gun and an AR-type automatic rifle after the shootout and were doing research in the French neighbourhood for possible explosive devices, law enforcement officials said. The FBI statement informed them that they continued their search for some explosive devices and that it is thought the author has not acted alone.

FBI agent Alethea Duncan said officials were investigating at least one improvised explosive device at the scene.

New Orleans Mayor La Toya Cantrell described the killings as a <x0... terrorist attack”.

New Orleans Police Chief Inspector Anne Kirkpatrick said the driver was “set to do the massacre and the damage caused by”.

It was a very deliberate behavior. This person was trying to print as many people as possible so that”, Mrs. Kirkpatrick said.

After the vehicle stopped, the driver went out and opened fire on the approaching officers, police said. The officers responded to the fire, killing the driver.

Two police officers were injured and in stable condition, police reported. Alongside them are 33 others injured in the car attack.

The area where the attack took place is a preferred destination for New Year's celebrations. /voa
