Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has announced he will resign in the coming days, as negotiations on forming the new government failed. He announced this decision through a video message on the X platform, where he explained talks on a coalition between Austria's People's Party (ÖVP), which he runs, and Austria's Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) ended without reaching an agreement.
Nehammer said he would leave as Chancellor and leader of the People's Party and that he would enable a smooth transition of power. He stressed that, despite efforts made so far, it was not possible to reach an agreement on key issues. “under these circumstances, there is no point in continuing for the sake of Austria's positive future,” Nehammer said.
On the part of the SP thereby, they say they offered co-operation until the last moment, but that the ⇩VP has not shown willingness to reach a compromise. The main points of the dispute are related to budget rebalancing, as well as the SP thereby asking for property and heritage taxes, which have been flatly rejected by ⇩VP.
Now that Nehammer is leaving, two possible possibilities for the future are for Eurosceptic Herbert Kickl to be charged with forming a new government, or called early elections. Austria's president, Alexander Van der Bellen, had named Nehammer to form the government, but now that this process has failed, a possible restructuring is on the verge.
